Confetti cannons look like magic, but the science is simple — and it's the reason they're safe to use indoors and around kids. Here's exactly how a confetti cannon works.
The short answer: compressed air, not fire
Unlike pyrotechnic products, a TUR confetti cannon has no flame, fuse, or gunpowder. Each cannon is powered entirely by compressed air sealed inside the base. When you twist the base, you break that seal, and the escaping air launches the contents up to 25 feet into the sky. That's the whole trick: stored air, released in an instant.
The three parts of a confetti cannon
1. The canister (the engine)
At the very bottom sits a sealed canister of pressurized air. Twisting it breaks the seal and sends a burst of air up through the tube. No canister, no pop.
2. The tube (the structure)
The sturdy cardboard tube holds everything in place and channels the air upward. A strong tube is what separates a weak, floppy popper from one that launches confetti high and clean — it focuses the airflow so nothing fizzles.
3. The contents (the magic)
Finally, the fun part: what actually flies out. Depending on the cannon, that's tissue confetti, vivid color powder, or dramatic streamers. The compressed air carries it up and out in a picture-perfect burst.
Why compressed air matters
Because there's no combustion, TUR cannons are non-pyrotechnic and venue-friendly — approved for indoor use where real smoke bombs and fireworks aren't allowed.
